Jimmer Pickens , a new courier for the Protectorate Logistics Corps awakens in his bunk on Heras, specifically within the city of Mytikas. An urgent order has just come through and its his turn to hop on a grav bike and run an urgent order of medical supplies across town. The first of the wounded from the wars at Brizeno are beginning to come home, and even with the long trip aboard the carrier here, those who were stabilized still need medical attention at home and the hospitals are burning through drugs at an alarming rate. Dispatch sirens sound within the logistics hub where you spend most of your time, almost everyone is being called in to make deliveries from how it seems. Heading down stairs to the warehouse floor and dispatch level, you can see your quartermaster boss behind a desk, talking on two phones at once and handing out delivery papers to those lining up by the desk.

Jim lines up by the desk and says to himself: "Wow, it really is rush hour right now, isn't it?" This is Jim's first real job after he got clean and he desperately needs the money. The busyness right now is certainly not helping Jim's nerves and he starts tapping his foot on the floor. (edited)

The two ahead of you are given papers. They're stamped with box numbers and a short manifest about what is in them along with piece counts, so the hospital will know the lots and what they're getting. You are next and you can see you likewise have a similar order. Lot 1337- 40 Healing Powder Lot 1339- 40 Tychosis Stimulant Lot 1444- 20 medpak, 20 medkit The boxes will easily fit on the grav bikes the courier service lets you use for your job, and the hospital you've been given is all the way across town. Normally this would not be an issue, but there are some enterprising groups out there looking for an easy score, and the medical drugs in your cargo are able to be sold for much more on the street to back alley ripper docs or thug sawbones trying to help keep their friends out of the hospital and jail. Some couriers have a sidearm or blade on them, and many Protectorate civil defense troopers look the other way if a courier needs to defend themselves when it comes time to testify in court.

Jim takes the packages and walks toward the parking area. He places the boxes on the Grav bike and starts it up. (How would a Grav bike be powered? I’m guessing it’s electric) He drives to the exit of the parking area and checks his gear. “Alright, got my rifle close to me, knife on me, compad… seems like we’re good to go.” He looks on the paper handout he was given and checks the address. And Jim drives to the address with a mild hurry. “Don’t want to be robbed on the first delivery now do we?” (edited)

Lashing the boxes to your bike and stepping on you fix your helmet into place. The bike takes a quick read of your finger print and its controls unlock as it accepts you as an authorized member of the company. The power system takes a few seconds to charge before you bring the bike out into the busy street in front of the warehouse. (notice/wis)

Moving off into traffic things seem routine. Your map shows you a long route across town that seems safer or a short one that runs through a neighborhood with a reputation for having a higher incidence of crime.

Moving into the lower district you can see people warning themselves by trash fires , clothesline’s strung up between the windows of homes and other signs that life in the capital has a hard side to it. A body lies in the road ahead and no one has stopped other than to walk around it as they continue their errands. Two men on the corner seem to be paying close attention to you as traffic comes to a stop here at the signal and cross traffic begins to flow

Jim double checks if he has his knife close to him as well as his rifle. He puts on his sunglasses and his most badass look, desperately trying to hide his face showing the fact that he might've made the wrong choice.

Jim looks the men straight in the eyes, hoping to look confident and maybe scare them away. But if that doesn’t work, there’s a backup plan. If they get too close Jim will speed off on his Gravbike weaving through traffic. And if the road is blocked by anything, he’ll have to fight. He holds the knife in his pocket firmly. (So I’ll ready the knife)

You think you might be able to weave through traffic if you're quick enough on the hand controls, if you decide not to fight. (basically the choice is weave through cross traffic and hope everything works out, or try to get the jump on them and hope they run if you drop one, your call)

Seeing your rifle, and that you were ready for them, the two would be hijackers put their hands up and take a few steps back from your bike, not wanting to get laser shots through the chest for their trouble. Ahead, the signal turns green again and traffic around you begins to move forward.

You have a steady drive ahead of you, having shaved ten minutes off your trip. Looking at the packages behind you, that ages old addiction begins to worm its way into your head. You find yourself debating the merits of pulling over now that you're safe to rifle around through the boxes, before focusing on the mission again, before the intrusive thoughts continue.

Jim looked over his shoulder at the boxes and quickly looked back at the road. "Don't do it Jim....." he whispered to himself. Would they notice if he took some? he asked himself. He pulled over to the side of the road and stepped off the Gravbike. He put his hands on the box he had to deliver and sighed. "I really can't, just wait 15 minutes and the craving will be gone. You start to feel the cold sweats and are shaking a bit as you pull up in front of the hospital, the boxes of goods not disturbed and everything is accounted for. You can breathe easy at least knowing you got things here on time and the piece count is correct. One of the orderlies here takes the delivery, and signs off that it is complete. You see no evidence of the gangers that almost accosted you earlier, your move put enough distance between you. (3xp, 5000 credits. I can help with the level up if needed)

(We;'ve got a ton of money now, far more than the average person would have in their lifetime. If we decided to pay that off we could to a mission to visit them, and maybe he'd have other work, now that you're in good standing with them, what do you think?

Money in hand with a large performance bonus, you first spend a bit to get yourself into a bit better position with the gear you have now. You're early for the delivery, and the bike doesn't need to go back to the depot just yet. It sounds like it's time to visit Mister E, and finally pay off the mounting debt that has been piling up since you first took those 20 credits for just one more hit of Null, all those years ago.

Jim gets back on is Gravbike, he doesn't look forward to seeing Mister E just as much as he does. He is the man who ruined his life after all, but finally paying off the debt that Jim has with E feels extremely rewarding and liberating. He types in Mister E's address on the nav and he starts driving.

The hideout is on the western side of town near the gate that leads out of the ringed city. It was once a warehouse, then temporarily a refugee shelter, and then was left empty and left to rot. No one from the city had ever come by to check on the place, or you suspect if they had, someone politely but firmly advised them they need to mark down whatever it takes to have the official not come back. Two men stand outside, smoking and casually talking. To passersby they might be workers or residents of nearby buildings, but you know them to be sentries' for Mister E. If they're here, then he must actually be inside.

Your weapons are left on your bike and a quick frisk reveals you are clean. The two sentries approve, and you're brought in through the front door and down a long stairwell to the basement where it looks like the next meal of the day for Mister E and his closest henchmen is being prepared. Upon seeing you, he cleans his hands on a napkin and waves you forward to take a seat at the table next to him. The others slide over, and a new plate is brought out for you.

"Some news? About my money?" he asks, as a sizzling steak is placed in front of you on the table. Mister E is into a few bites of his own, and although you owe him a good deal of money, you don't feel any hostility coming off him.

“You guessed correctly.” Jim takes on of the knives next to his plate and starts cutting his steak into small pieces. “Mmm, this is sooo good.” Jim says with his mouth full. He swallows the piece of steak in his mouth. “Sorry”. He starts cutting another piece of the steak. “But today I made a delivery, and since I encountered some trouble along the way, they payed me extra! I got this nice new armor ánd…. I can finally give you your money back!”

"We're looking into working for a new client. The cargo isn't illegal in itself, but the client is. A merc organization named Nexcorp is working a few systems over, and while we're not too sure of the reason, they can no longer get food provisions in the system they're occupying. We've offered to bring them food, and to meet with their ship. Your part of the operation is going to come from stealing the cargo we're giving them. A Protectorate shipment is heading off world, and we're going to storm the ship just before it takes off. This is going to be very dangerous, and the Protectorate will relentlessly go after anyone they can identify who was involved in this. "

He never gets to answer as a series of laser bolts rip into his body. Two more guards near the door are also cut down by laser crossfire as Protectorate troopers begin their no knock raid. "Down! Everyone down!" The sergeant of the unit yells as another group of them pushes into the basement behind an advancing wall of riot shields. "Down on the floor or we shoot!" he shouts. The smell of burned blood is fresh in the air.

You do not have a weapon and are not fighting back, you feel your hands bound but no further harm comes to you. Others aren't so lucky and those who fight pay the price. As others are being hauled out of the room, you're put in a chair as the sergeant and a more patrician looking officer in a captain's uniform hold a compad in front of your face. "No record on you. "It takes a crew of five to make the ship work. You'll have people giving you orders if things go wrong. We need to assume that if this mission doesn't launch now, Nexcorp will know there's a problem. We wouldn't have time for a test anyway"

The Voice of Hermes is standing by as you’re whisked from the settlement up to space. It’s a proud vessel, one of the first the Protectorate created natively. Marines with life support gear are boarding the vessel, and you can see Nexcorp is in for a violent surprise once you get to the target system. The five bridge crew are also preparing to get aboard

They introduce themselves one after the other. The crew consists of the captain, another pilot , a navigator, a comms officer and a gunner. You are the second pilot, as someone needs to remain at the controls at all times, even when the ship is in spike

In his downtime, Jim volunteers to also do some mechanic work on the side, with the actual mechanics telling him what needs to be done and how. If Jim ever owns a ship himself he'll need to know how to fix things.

Nexcorp has come to support the conflict here in a way that ensures it will continue for some time, mostly by facilitating transport of spec ops between both worlds and serving as local police or logistics support so the belligerents can keep fighting and the company avoids Any blue on blue type situations. A supply cruiser begins to turn toward your approaching craft on detecting it, heading out to make the rendezvous

The airlocks of the approaching vessels begin to connect with one another and air is pumped out slowly so a proper seal is formed. "Jimmer!" one of the marines calls up to you "Grab a gun and get back here, we're going to have you with the rear squad so we can get this thing moving quick once we take it"

The connection between the two ships is achieved through a long docking tube, and you can hear a brief burst of gunfire as the troops on the enemy ship who unluckily opened the door are cut down, almost instantly. It will only be a few seconds before people realize something is wrong. "Go! Go!" the marines call out.

Two of them hit, each of them dropping one of the Nexcorp soldiers. You’re not sure if they’re dead or not but they’re going to be dealing with punctured ship suits none the less. The Nexcorp soldiers begin retreating a few steps back toward the bridge and return fire. A marine to your right falls as a void carbine slug punches into their helmet, and then indents the back as the round passes through their head.

(112-116 of the core book. This ship is a civilian ship so has 3 command points to spend. shields aren’t a thing in stars without number , even the base setting. Your best bet is just taking the escape combat action to try to our pilot them and escape )

Seeing the firearm many of those near the back of the crowd take a step or two back from you, adding to the press. From what you’re able to gather there is apparently some kind of protest happening right now. Some small dispute over docking hours and longshore fees has been taken to a level it was never supposed to be as dockside workers clash with security. So far nobody has been killed but there have been some injuries. The real issues and causes for this demonstration seem to be confused at best.

You're able to take some of the momentum out of the fight. The clashes at the front of the pack continue as security wrestles with a few of the people that were not going to give up, but you're otherwise allowed to walk through the crowd toward the captain. Approaching to 20m, his security sees you're carrying a rifle, and they raise their own. "Place the rifle down and don't come any closer until you do"

You're not able to conceal yourself among the crowd, but you see where most of those protesting go after a few more hours pass. A catena on the southern side of the station seems to be the destination of most of them, but they;'ve seen you coming in and aren;t talking business right now. They had all seen you get through the security cordon to speak with the captain directly, and though they could not hear your words, they cannot be sure you are here acting as his agent or not.

Because of the information on the current situation on Chloe got to him during downtime, Jimmer knows this is probably not going to end very well. Unless he can convince the UNW that he isn’t the guy that provided a group of terrorists with guns. “Shit…” he says and stays quiet for a while. He considers jumping away immediately to try and escape, but he knows that it will probably have his death as a result. Jimmer opens a line of communication with the UNW ships to answer.

Good morning Minty. Welcome to Urreturre. I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news but we're inspecting every ship coming out of the Chloe system due to some reports of instability there. I'm sure things are fine on board, but under Federation Law we're going to have to check. Will you consent to an inspection?

The first of the ships makes contact with your airlock and there is a hiss of pressure before the lights turn green. A junior UNW naval officer and two marines armed with void carbines make their way into the airlock, and wait to be invited aboard.

Jimmer opens the airlock and lets them in, nodding politely. "Do any of you want some coffee or some tea? I also have some juice if you prefer that." He looks to one of his crew member. "Kevin, would you please get the ship's papers for me?" (edited)

"Nothing for me, thank you. " the officer says "I get off watch once we're done here and I cannot wait to hit the rack. Anyway, I wanted to let you know we appreciate you working with us. Your ship was mentioned in a dispatch from Chloe, and you've just jumped in from the system. There is some violence there, suddenly armed terrorists look to be trying to take over the platform. I'm not saying you did anything wrong, but you see how it looks. Don't you?"

"I think my friends and I are going to need to look around a bit, but I'm sure we'll have some. We would need to see your cargo hold, your navigation system, and we'll of course need to secure any weapons on board for the time we're here. Just need to post someone at the armory"

(its up to you if you want to or not, I think you taking charge or trying to is the best chance here, you said you had a plan, I'm trying to balance them acting reasonably with not stepping on whatever you're trying to do)

(I agree with that. I didn't plan on shooting unless you shot first or tried to run, but there is a mountain of physical evidence against you. What would you say to a mission to help the UNW out to make up for it ? )

(That was my original plan, to let them kinda feel sorry for me, and me playing dumb. And when they said I would be arrested or something like that, I would say I knew nothing about terrorists and that I would like to help the UNW take Chloe back.)

(There is a big UNW mission already doing it, which is technically about a week in time after this moment, but since everyone else left some tasks undone, we can get you working on one of those to help out if that sounds good)

The empty armory, full cargo hold, and the navigation data from your ship- plus your mention in the panicked message from the station crew is enough for the local patrol to arrest you. You and your ship are impounded on Urreturre for a week and a half as more evidence from the platform assault comes in. Your guilt is all but proven and you’re expecting the warden or some kind of UNW punishment detail to arrive when instead it looks like an administrator is waiting to speak with you

"You don't need to" The administrator says as he gets into the cell. "Your guilt is more than proven. We're offering you a way out of this cell, and a way to help yourself, your polity , and the UNW all at once. It is your choice to accept the mission, but if you don't the offer is not going to be extended again. We're looking for information, and it just so happens your vessel is not doing anything at the moment. We have of coursed seized your cargo. The proceeds will be put into a fund to help the people of Chloe recover from your actions. We are looking for someone to venture north, to the Northern Free State Singularity, specifically with the intent to steal some information for us. Their uplift programs are far more advanced than our own, and we need to know how they're enlightening so many people so quickly. Any program information you can return to us will be viewed in light of your punishment, and you will earn your freedom if the information is good enough. So what do you think? Will you accept?" (alright, ill lead you through the planet's well take on the way there since the UNW has laid the course in for you. I'll post reports on the way. As far as pacing, the UNW knows its going to be a long trip, so if something interesting is happening on the way north you can stop, but if you entirely abandon the quest that will be an issue, and ill drop warnings as needed so its not a surprise)

Entering the system you find it to be busy with large numbers of system craft, ranging from defense boats to small miners and tramp merchants. Their contact with spike craft has been limited, with only a few passing through in recent days.

Entering the platform you hear a hiss of pressurized air and a green light by the airlock signals it is safe to come aboard. Passing through security and medical both scanners turn green signaling you're complying with the terms and not trying to smuggle anything inside. One of the guards waves you forward as you pass through the last of the scans, and after hearing your question while you collect your things, he says there is a bar known as Serenity on the sunward side of the station that most people seem to go to when they're coming in to relax.

And yeah, we just had trillions of people die all at once, only happened five years ago. No jump gates, no one here has a spike drive, where's anyone supposed to go?"

"Common ingots, some rare, and we're very lucky to have a high level of exceptional ingots here as well. " (rather than there being individual prices for specific types of metal, the book groups them into common, rare, and a homebrew category, exceptional , of ascending value)

(there is a whole far trade sheet and whatnot, this is probably all stuff Jimmer in character would know, but the goods have a base value, it goes up or down depending on where you're trading and what the various planets want, like any other commodity market) "Well sure, but you're only the second or third person to come through here since The Scream with a spike drive. I don't understand what you're suggesting or what you'd like us to do. When merchant's dont enter the system to buy your goods, anything you have stockpiled is equally worthless"
